In 2007, the Corporation of the Arts of Panguipulli, a small town in southern Chile, began an educational initiative supporting children and rural schools. Music, painting, dance, and literature, among others, are provided in remote locations, introducing children, teenagers, and families to art and culture. For years they were housed in a beautiful wooden house, that was a former Catholic mission. However, the space where the cultural project was founded reached its capacity and saw the need to create a new place, a space envisioned as a grand new room, a theater with the character of an open school for the children and the community. The chosen location is a lake edge site, where one of the country's most beautiful landscapes is found. The new project, the result of a public competition, takes the form of a compact structure, aiming to touch the ground as little as possible and strategically positioning itself among the trees. The volume is placed, defining a tree-lined square facing the city, and establishing a new promenade along the waterfront. Towards the lake, a second square with floors, rocks, and water is proposed, welcoming the opening of the stage in the summer and connecting the theater with the outdoors.
The project is conceived as a box within a box. In architectural terms, the perimeter accommodates public and undefined spaces such as the foyer, cafeteria, and exhibition hall. A box crafted as a translucent and open wooden fabric, thus assuming a scale proper to the site and the lake. Inside, a blind box houses a 250-seat theatre designed as a flexible space for teaching and presenting. An opaque volume, acoustically and thermally insulated, conceived as an integrated space that eliminates the proscenium, creating a continuous interior that opens up to the lake through a single window spanning its entire width. The building is constructed predominantly with a glulam structure, manufactured with local material, and the entire design is modular to facilitate the details, construction, and assembly processes. Similarly, the strategy of a box within a box allows for the control of sustainable aspects of a cold region of southern Chile. Currently, the Theater of the Arts of Panguipulli offers a way to bring culture to an extensive and dispersed territory like Chile, involving the community, children, and young people from rural and remote areas where culture and art are lacking in their education. Today, with numbers that grow each day, the project reaches over 2,500 children.
