Treating the Renovation of Old Buildingswith a Mentality of "Friendship Between the Generations"
We found an abandoned Hui-style building in the forest of Longwu Mountain in Hangzhou. The unique moon beams and corbel brackets of the building are fascinating. What a mysterious encounter. The ancient house was built in the Qing Dynasty, and the owner of the house cannot be verified, but he must be a traveler from Huizhou who came to Hangzhou and built a building to express his homesickness.
This project plans to transform the old building into a place for afternoon tea and dining. Contemporary China is in the stage of revitalizing its culture, which is a long way to go. We noticed that deep down people think that old Chinese architecture is "ugly", "backward" and even "horrible", and they like playgrounds more than contemporary gardens. The state of mind as described in a Chinese couplet has disappeared, "my heart has discovered true ease amidst the clouds and mists of the mountains; my life has gained a fierce freedom from the rocks and torrents of the fells". The simple aesthetics of architecture was destroyed.
We hope that the old Hui-style buildings can be respected, Inspired by "the art of the land", much of the renovation "grew" out of the ground, allowing the wooden structure of the old building to be preserved. We put a "mountain forest sculpture" in the courtyard. The raised shape of the sculpture is inspired by the Lion Forest Garden. When people in the past bought land to build their homes, most of the areas were used to build rockeries and outdoor gardens, with small areas in the corners for living. It is evident that the traditional Chinese literati had a preference for nature. We also respect the pattern of old Hui-style mansions, retaining the open-air courtyard rather than keeping it indoors. The "waist-high" shape resembles a "mountain forest". When you walk amongst the mountains and forests, you are like a traveler far away from home. The difference is that the size of you and the mountain forest changes and you become a giant.
The old buildings are like old people. The Loop Chair is placed at the front of the entrance, showing the "Friendship Between the Generations". When you enter the courtyard, the independently designed chandelier hangs under the eaves, which has a retro-futuristic style. The spheres and cubes give the old building vibrancy as if the old man is wearing hipster clothes.
On the white sculptural block, the beanbag is completely separated from the tradition. The young man sits on a beanbag, drinking coffee and listening to the birds chirping. The old wooden texture of the building is fully displayed before the young man. We intend to awaken young people's awareness of the texture of old buildings and to make more and more young people like traditional objects.
For the design of plants, we deliberately avoided any kind of "traditional ideology". The new plants are not planned in Chinese style, which is equivalent to giving nutrition to the "old people", mature but not sincere. It is also different from Japanese garden plants. The delicate Japanese style is not a characteristic of Chinese culture. We used "wild" plants, which grow with enthusiasm, to create a wonderful atmosphere. The yellow rocks were selected and carried by gardeners from the hills surrounding the old building. Their unique shapes cannot be replicated. For the plants, we chose species with a savage flavor, such as Phragmites and Fern.
Traditional buildings cannot have large windows due to the lack of technology. Thus the ancients enjoyed "thought-provoking light". In response to the demand for sunlight, we made adjustments to expand the window area on the exterior walls to bring in the beauty of the mountains and forests. There is the old building, the sound of wind, birdsong, beautiful scenery and coffee. The breeze blows on your face and you can see it all here.
