How does the architecture relate to the surrounding environments? Hiroshi Kinoshita interested in the spacing of them. There was a two-story reinforced concrete building facing a large street in a small town. The project has begun with the client who chose this building for his collection of books and I suggested that it could be opened to the town as a private library. There is a river that cross the town nearby, and there are a promenade and a small park where people can walk comfortably. The ground floor is a plaza-like area under the arcade where people can access to read books freely. Hiroshi Kinoshita expected this small transformation can give little changes for the surroundings and the scene. The entrance of the building comprises six glass sliding doors that face the arcade street, and there was a space with an intermediate area between the interior and the exterior at the back. Taking advantage of this simple structures, Hiroshi Kinoshita composed the building into three large rooms as to set up in a sense of each other instead of being separate places. Also it achieves an interesting abstraction of the contrast between the rough aged concrete and the very smooth concrete to reveal the concrete slab by removing the existing ceiling. To give the image of plaza, it would be wiped off that the interior design of the store below the arcade. For this reason, Hiroshi Kinoshita had the continuity in mind between the arcade street and the town space by considered the bench as architecture (not as furniture) where people can sit and read a book. Hiroshi Kinoshita hopes that this design would be helped to give the little changes by the people who live in the town meet the books here and find diverse outlooks.
